Week 4: Days 5 & 6 (English 110)

Image
An overview of this week (with details below): Look at feedback in that Last Batch of Exercises for Group Zero, introduce Group 1, and continue working on Large Project 1. Monday, January 31: Journal Prompts: What are the rules to writing that you’ve been taught? Take time to think about why those rules exist. Are they legit rules? Are they myths? Are they just ways to get people to write “one correct way” that doesn’t really exist? Feedback intro/assistance using the textbook and  Animoto video . Ask a student to be my "guinea pig" to give feedback to. Introduction to Group 1 with Chapter 3.3 and Chapter 4. {If you would like to hear this introduction, email Sybil & she'll send you the link.} Wednesday, February 2: Journal Prompt: When you read that “problems are normal” when it comes to writing, what is your response? What problems do you see with Large Project 1? Large Project 1 work time - Play with slideshow web sites, find images of media works, and draft annot...

Week 3 / Days 3 and 4 = English 110.

Here's the layout for Monday and Wednesday (I get to see y'all for two days finally!). Monday, January 24: Journal Prompt: Are you writing cross-culturally in this classroom? Why or Why Not? Also: What kinds of writing do you think you’ll do in your future workplace? I am going to move things around in the schedule a wee bit. I basically want to introduce things SOONER; however, just because I introduce things earlier than originally scheduled, I will not move deadlines to earlier dates. In the schedule linked in Blackboard, I will note this with a different colored font. Exercise recap and work time: If you haven't started Group Zero's exercises, use today to complete the first batch. Then complete the second batch Wednesday, then the third batch over the weekend, etc. to get caught up. End with Google Voice # Check-In. Wednesday, January 26: Journal Prompt: When have you failed at something? Did you learn from it? How do you feel about failing at writing in order to i...

Week 2 / Day 2 (F2F Eng110)

Class started with me sending around a sign-in sheet and covering a few odds & ends: Did everyone get my Friday Reminder Email? I deleted the Syllabus Quiz. Whoopsie. First Day Survey observations: most of the songs given to me for the student playlist were country or hip hop with a sprinkle of Prince and the Beatles; 74% said they'd use class time to work since we meet in a computer lab, 87% wanted to use class time to work on homework and projects; 16% didn't know how to back up work, and 74% are downloading the textbook to their device(s). If at any point we meet virtually, or students need to attend class virtually, I will not ask for them to turn on their cameras. Note : The printer in the classroom is not wireless; you need to log onto the computers to print. Journal prompt - respond to each question in a few sentences; we devoted 3 minutes to each: Is spelling “everything correctly” a sign of intelligence? What do students mean when they say: “I can’t write well”? Wh...

Day 1 / Week 1 - Spring 2022

No mask mandate (yet!?😬), and it was nice to see students' FACES today after starting three semesters with only eyeballs. It was weird AND cool all at once. {And maybe slightly dangerous?} Okay, so the journal entry for English 110 on this first day is a choice between responding to the Peter Elbow quote or answering whether you are a writer or not and why. These questions are better explained in the detailed part of our schedule (at the end of the syllabus - look online if you miss class today). By the time I see ya'll next week, please complete two exercises in the First Batch of Exercises (Chapter 1) and the Beginning of the Semester Reflection . These items can be completed on paper; I'll email students on Friday (January 13) with documents they can print and fill out.
