Week 6 for All Classes.

In English 110, I will introduce Group 2’s activities* Mon/Tues and reminded everyone to hand in Group 1 tonight, if possible, and then we’ll use Wednesday/Thursday as our last in-class workday for Large Project 1. Next week is Online Peer Review and optional writing conferences with me. *Group 2 includes the genres of memoir, profile, obituary, and resume. Once again, there are two options to choose from in order to practice these genres. = In English 120, we completed a fake news worksheet as a substitute for Unit 5’s discussion board; we’ll do the same thing with Unit 6 and 7 next week. If students miss class, they should complete the original discussion boards in these units. On Wednesday, students* should introduce themselves to Large Project 2; there is a video and template to use. *My vertigo caused me to cancel Wednesday classes.

English 110 - Week 5.

In English 110 (Monday/Tuesday), I recorded a "how to" guide/video for completing Group 1. Students can access it through Blackboard (via the Blackboard Collaborate tab) or by emailing me for the public link. On Wednesday, we will dive into Large Project 1; I will go over how to start this project - I may cover how to find images or how to cite sources, etc.  Students were reminded to fill out the self-assessment quizzes after completing all of Group Zero's activities. If they did not complete Step #2 of the Feedback Bootcamp, they need to do so before awarding themselves points for that activity. I think we might have to push back the LP1 deadline a week and have them "due" October 11/12 instead... {I just updated the tabs in Blackboard and the schedule to reflect this change.} --- In English 110 today (Wed/Thurs), I attempted to go through a  worksheet that showed off the step-by-step process for putting together LP1 as well as how to find images and cite sou...

English 120 - Week 5.

I had figured/assumed students might be a wee bit behind on Unit 4 and in their creation of Large Project 1 drafts; the students confirmed my suspicions/assumptions in class today. So, we moved Peer Workshop to Wednesday, and they worked on Unit 4 in class today ("due" at midnight). Unit 5 will be done IN CLASS together next Monday, so students can focus on LP1 Wednesday through the weekend. We will also conduct optional f2f writing conferences (with me) Wednesday. IF students feel they have a solid draft and don't need my help, and have already uploaded their drafts to the Unit 4 Peer Workshop spot, they could skip class Wednesday, and give feedback to a classmate sometime after Wednesday's class session.

F2F Class Substitutions - Sept 13 - 16 (Week 4).

{My apologies for being out sick this week. Please follow the instructions below.} English 110 (8am TR/11am MW/1pm MW):  Complete Step #2 of the Feedback Bootcamp in Blackboard (under Group Zero). Read over the Group 1 Activities and bring questions about them next week. Please complete the self-assessment quiz for Group Zero if you have completed everything in that group. Feel free to work ahead and complete Group 1's quiz and begin to draft Large Project 1: The Project Playlist. = English 120 (3pm MW):  Review Step #2 of the Feedback Bootcamp in order to prep yourself for the Peer Workshop next week. Students should continue to work on LP1 draft. Students should also start to work on Unit 4 discussion via Blackboard.  Here is a  small batch of helpful slides about outlining LP1 . Here is an even  smaller slide deck about Peer Workshop and Writing Conferences .

Media Definition.

A student just used my Google Voice number to ask about whether a Bible verse is a media work (for Large Project 1). Media is, by definition, " a  medium  of cultivation, conveyance, or expression." So, I wrote back: "Sure."

Feedback Bootcamp Tomorrow...

So, I updated the English 120 Gradebooks, and, now, I need to pause and think about what's happening tomorrow in all classes. The Feedback Bootcamp. Just Step #1. I have audio for it, so if they want to listen and flip through slides on their phones, they can. Then they'll read a chosen article on feedback and post to a Padlet summarizing their thoughts. + I printed off handouts with the links to the bootcamp, the audio, and the Padlet; these handouts, for English 110, can be recycled from class to class. I'll take screenshots of each Padlet after the class time wraps up. + I also printed off checklists the students can fill in for Large Project 1 (both English 110 and English 120). I guess I'm intermingling auditory learning and tactile learning tomorrow? COOL BEANS. I think Step #2 for the Feedback Bootcamp will be conducted at the beginning of next week for English 110, but for English 120, we might delay Step #2 until our first Peer Workshop session for Large Pr...

Friday Reminder Emails.

Image
I probably don't *have* to send out Friday Reminders to students that say something like "um, hi, here's what's due next week in case you forgot and stuff" but I like to, even if only a few actually read the buggers. Today, I shall attach a few memes/tweets perhaps (below). Yep.

End of Week 2, English 120 Edition.

Here's what we did yesterday in English 120 (3pm Hybrid): Look at Scavenger Hunt in Padlet & Bb - answer Qs, if any.  Watch videos in Unit 2 Class Discussion regarding Ethos, Pathos, and Logos & Logical Fallacies. Introduction to Large Project 1.  Look at Feedback Bootcamp Step #1 Slides → Padlet Discussion.  For Next Time, take Unit 2 Quiz in Blackboard - Ethos, Pathos, Logos & Logical Fallacies. For Next Time, brainstorm what your topic will be for Large Project 1. I didn't plan super well, so we didn't get to the Feedback Bootcamp. We'll do that in class next Wednesday before jumping into Unit 3's stuff.

End of Week 2, English 110 Edition.

In today's English 110 classes, we're going to: Review Scenario #4 and Story #1. Conduct a quick tutorial of how to upload something to Blackboard. Introduce ourselves to Large Project #1 = The Project Playlist .  Use time in class to complete the Writing Sample for Group Zero. Students will be able to print off their sample if they use the campus computers in the lab, OR they can share a link in Blackboard to their Google Doc, OR they can upload their MS Word document to Blackboard, too. Many choices! For next time, students should brainstorm what 5-10 media pieces they might use for LP1. In class next week: Feedback Bootcamp!
